Washington's overdose death rate grew by the largest percentage of any state, 2014-2024

From 2014 to 2024, Washington's age-adjusted overdose death rate rose 182.7%, from 13.3 to 37.6 per 100,000, the largest increase of any state. Alaska (168.5%) and Oregon (161.7%) were next, followed by Vermont (141.7%) and North Dakota (134.9%). The median western state rose 79.4%, against 52.1% for other states. The U.S. rate rose 57.1%.
