Most state laws reach further than I-638, except on verifying every girl

Node: chart:i638-vs-state-laws-by-dimension:1

Stacked bars for eight dimensions, each totaling 28 states. Stricter than I-638: 25 states cover college sports, 24 let harmed students sue, 6 also bar girls from boys' teams, 3 penalize noncomplying schools. Looser than I-638: 25 require no routine proof of sex from every girl, 27 require no provider sign-off for every girl, 28 do not routinely limit verification to anatomy, genes or testosterone, and 8 set a grade floor.

Hover over the chart or focus a point to inspect its values.

IL26-638 is looser than most state laws on scope and enforcement: 25 of 28 also cover college sports and 24 let harmed students sue, which I-638 does not. It is stricter than nearly all of them on verification: only Oklahoma, Utah and Nebraska require proof of sex from every athlete, only Nebraska requires a doctor's signature for every athlete, and none routinely limits the check to anatomy, genetics or testosterone as I-638 does for every girl.

What this chart asks

On which dimensions is IL26-638 stricter or looser than the 28 enacted state measures of its kind?

Why it is shown this way

  • Stacked bars show each dimension's 28 states split three ways; every bar totals 28, so the split is directly comparable across dimensions.
  • Vertical bars are used because the chart subset requires a numeric Y axis.

Limitations

  • Dimensions are unweighted; the chart does not say which dimension matters most.
  • Coded from statute and regulation text only; athletic-association rules and enforcement practice are not shown.
  • 'Stricter' means reaching more students or schools, demanding more, or enforcing harder; it is not a judgment of merit.
