What this chart asks
Is the male margin over females similar for Olympic champions and for Washington's largest-school high-school champions?
Why it is shown this way
- Points rather than bars because two series share each event; FactHub's bar mark stacks colored series, which would add the two percentages together.
- The y axis starts at zero so the size of each margin is shown honestly.
- Only events contested identically by both sexes (same distance, same jump) are included.
Chart annotations
These markers provide relevant context for interpreting the chart. Their timing or position does not, by itself, establish causation.
- 10% reference line
-
Threshold: 10
Running margins are female time / male time - 1; jump margins are male distance / female distance - 1.
Why this is marked: Marks the roughly 10% gap that peer-reviewed reviews of elite performance report, for reference.

Limitations
- Each point is a single final; wind, weather and tactics affect one race.
- The high-school pole vault (45.8%) and long jump (32.1%) margins are driven by one outstanding boys' winner; the 8th-place boys' margins in those events were 16.6% and 18.1%.
- Margins compare only the winners, not typical athletes.
