What this chart asks

Where would the fastest high-school girls ever finish among Washington's boy state finalists in the 1600m?

Why it is shown this way

  • Each dot is one real boy finalist, so readers see the whole field rather than an average.
  • The girls' benchmarks are drawn as one point per year at the same height so they read as level reference marks across the field.
  • The y axis does not start at zero because every time lies between about 4:00 and 5:00; starting at zero would flatten the differences that decide places.

Limitations

  • Boys' times are from one championship race each; their season bests are faster. The girls' benchmarks are lifetime bests, so the chart favors the girls.
  • Only 2A, 3A and 4A finals; the 1A, 2B and 1B meet is not included.
  • Lower is faster: points below a girls' benchmark are boys who beat it.
  • The U.S. benchmark is the 1600m split inside a mile race, not a full 1600m race.
