Chart

Boys' and girls' state mile times barely overlap

Two step histograms of state-final 1600m times: boys between about 4:00 and 4:50, girls between about 4:40 and 6:00. They overlap only between 4:43.18, the fastest girl, and 4:47.73, the slowest boy.
273 of 276 boy finalists ran faster than the fastest girl finalist, 4:43.18, who would have placed 274th of 277 among the boys. The slowest boy, 4:47.73, would have placed 7th of 275 among the girls.

Every finish in Washington's 2A-4A state 1600m finals, 2022-2026: 276 boys and 274 girls.

What this chart asks

How far do boys' and girls' state-final 1600m times overlap?

Why it is shown this way

  • Two distributions on one baseline show how little they overlap; the dot views show every finish as its own dot.
  • The overlap band and the rank callouts are computed from the rows, so they can't drift from the data.
