From 2011-12 to 2019-20, households moving to Washington usually earned about as much as or more than those leaving. Since 2020-21 leavers have earned more on average: 15.7% more in 2021-22 and 11.4% more in 2022-23.

What this chart asks

Have households leaving Washington earned more on average than households moving in?

Why it is shown this way

  • Two lines show where leavers' and arrivals' averages cross, which is the claim.
  • Dollars are nominal; within a year both groups are in the same dollars, so the gap between the lines is what matters.
  • The y axis starts at zero so the size of the gap is not exaggerated.

Chart annotations

These markers provide relevant context for interpreting the chart. Their timing or position does not, by itself, establish causation.

New IRS matching method
2022-23

IRS's 2022-23 file matches returns differently, adding about 5% more returns.

Why this is marked: IRS's 2022-23 users guide notes the method change, so the last point is not strictly comparable with earlier ones.

Limitations

  • Averages per tax return are pulled up by a few very high incomes and one-time gains, and depend on household size.
  • IRS changed its matching method for 2022-23, adding about 5% more returns.
  • Covers moves between states only, by people who filed federal returns in both years.
