Analysis

Produced and used, counted two ways

Did the US produce more oil than it used in 2025?

Coverage: 2025 annual average

Contained in US oil produced and used, 2025: two ways to count.

What this dataset measures

These four figures settle whether the US produces more oil than it uses, and show why the answer depends on whether gases like propane count as oil.

Produced and used, counted two ways

Question: Did the US produce more oil than it used in 2025?

Result: Counting gas liquids, 21.2 million barrels a day produced and 20.7 million used. Crude oil alone, 13.7 million pumped and 16.4 million run by refineries.

Operation: Divide each EIA figure by 1,000 for million barrels a day, and group them into two readings: crude oil plus natural gas liquids produced against all oil and fuel used, and crude oil produced against crude oil run by refineries.

Scope: US annual averages, 2025

View this analysis

  • Use is EIA's products supplied, oil and fuel delivered to US buyers, close to but not exactly what is burned.
  • The crude-only reading compares crude pumped in the US with crude run by US refineries, not with all crude used.

Limitations and reproducibility

reproducible: Each value is copied from EIA's Supply and Disposition, U.S., Annual table (release of October 30, 2026), at the row and column named in the table. The analysis divides each by 1,000 to give million barrels a day.

  • EIA measures use as products supplied: oil and fuel delivered to US buyers, which is close to, but not exactly, what is burned.
  • Field production of crude oil and natural gas liquids (13,662 + 7,516) is 21,178 thousand barrels a day, one more than EIA's own total of 21,177, because of rounding in EIA's table.
  • 2025 figures are EIA's first annual release and can be revised.
