Break-even wages under alternative assumptions
Question: How sensitive is the break-even wage to career length, age at use, wage path and discount rate?
Result: Base case: $157,300 simple, $82,600 present value. Workers now 45 (20 years of premiums): $314,700 and $195,300. Near-retirees earn 10% of the benefit per year of premiums, which costs more than $3,650 only above $629,300 a year.
Operation: Solve by bisection for the career-average wage at which premiums equal the benefit, for each scenario.
Scope: Ten scenarios, including near-retirees born before 1968.
- Scenarios are illustrative, not probabilities.
Robustness check for: Career premiums vs. the maximum benefit, by wage
